As one of Paddington’s longest operating cafes, Sassafra’s Canteen continues to change things up with their latest wholesome Autumn breakfast menu. Apple pie breakfast bowls, essene spelt toast, sand crab omelettes and the list goes on. Along with the extensive breakfast menu, the team of chefs have a delicious array of specials on offer. Admittedly, this was the first time I had step foot into Sassafra's in all of the four years I've lived in Brisbane. When we visited, the specials menu was graced by sourdough french toast with grilled peaches and vanilla bean crème fraiche. Even if you're not fond of peaches, you will be after you get yours hands on this delicious breakfast. After glancing at the menu and wondering what else we should sample, Peter (one of the cafe owner's) insisted we should order the Essene spelt toast with labneh and creamed red kale and boy am I glad we did. And finally one of the standout dishes Sassafra's new Autumn menu has to offer, the sandcrab omelette, which was bursting at the seams with fresh sandcrab meat and deliciously fluffy kipfler potatoes.
As for coffee, Sassafra's use a local blend sourced from specialty coffee roasters, Bear Bones Espresso. These guys are based in Brisbane, so the roasted beans are exceptionally fresh.
Sassafra’s canteen style lunch menu is equally exciting as their new Autumn menu. Each day an array of freshly prepared foods are set along bench tops for you to choose from. The variety of lunch options change daily, ranging from gourmet salads, pizzas to roasts, fish dishes, tartine and savoury tarts.
Breakfast at Sassafra’s operates 7 days a week from 7.00am – 11.30am.
